COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides essential knowledge and skills for health practitioners to prevent Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV, focusing on the strategies and interventions that support the global goal of eliminating MTCT (eMTCT). Learners will gain expertise in offering HIV testing, administering antiretroviral treatment, and reporting PMTCT services, with the ultimate aim of reducing infant HIV infections to zero. The course also emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development to keep pace with advancements in Maternal and Child Health.

At the end of this unit, participants should be able to:

- Explain the status of mother to child transmission of HIV
- Identify factors affecting mother to child transmission of HIV
- Discuss the relationship between syphilis and HIV transmission
- State the risk factors for congenital syphilis and MTCT of HIV
- Explain the effects of HIV and syphilis infection on pregnancy
- Discuss the triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Syphilis and hepatitis B
- Demonstrates the ability to counsel mothers and other family members on eMTCT
